Pixel And Parker – Spinlight Studio Puts A New Spin On Storybooks
You all know what a fan I am of Spinlight Studio apps, right? If you aren’t take a look at Tally Tots, Alpha Tots, and Swapsies. L.O.V.E all of their stuff. Not only do I love the educational value my children get, my girls enjoy the apps too.
Spinlight has released their first book (Universal), and I honestly hope it isn’t their last. I’ve seen a ton of books on the iPad and iPhone geared towards children and they are very similar in style. But, once in a while, a developer comes up with a new twist that gets me excited again. Pixel And Parker is one of those books. At first, I was hesitant about doing a book review, but because I’ve never been disappointed by Spinlight Studio before, I had to do it. I’m so glad I did!
The book follows the story of Parker and his friend (and cat) Pixel. Parker can’t find Pixel and he needs to find him before the sun goes down! He looks everywhere for him, and the reader can actually help him find Pixel! Instead of a static beginning to end story, Pixel and Parker is an interactive and dynamic story that will be different every time it is read. Yes, the outcome is the same, but getting there will always be a little bit different.
The adventure begins when a game board type page comes up complete with a spinner. The child spins to get the number of spaces Parker will move. Each spot that Parker stops will have some type of activity that will either help find Pixel or add another clue as to where Pixel has been. Having two children that actively participate in the iPad books, I loved the spinner and game board style! No more fighting over whose turn it is to tap the pages! Whoever spins gets to do the activity! Yay! And, yes, I really am excited that there is a clear “whose turn is it now”….my girls fight like cats and dogs!
There are also t-shirts children can save and change Parker -just for something different. My girls enjoyed the book, enjoyed the activities, and love that they can come back to it and have it be a little bit different each time. Way to go, Spinlight, for having another great addition to your portfolio -and my library!
